I'm alone, yeah, I don't know if I can face the night
I'm in tears, and the cryin' that I do is for you
I want your love, let's break the walls between us

There was a time that she believed when you were dead, you were free from pain and worry. After you were taken from the world, you would be at peace and all of your battles would be over. There would be nothing to be afraid of and everything was all right.

Mary Winchester knew better than all of that now.

Years of watching the battles that her husband and her sons had gone through since her death had changed all of that. While she was a restless spirit, she wasn't haunting any place. No, she knew how she had died and she knew why, so there was none of this waiting around looking for answers before she moved on. She had moved on, but the pain of her family kept her coming back.

The demon had done things, horrible things and because of what she had done when she was younger, her loved ones were paying the price.

She had done a few things here and there in an attempt to make things easier on the men she loved. She had gone after that evil ghost that was trying to kill her sons and were scaring that poor young mother half to death. Missouri told Sam that she had burned herself up going after the ghost, but she hadn't. She kept watch over her house sometimes and sometimes she went to look in on her men.

Tonight, she was sitting in a chair near John's bed, watching him sleep. His sleep wasn't restful at all and she could feel tears in her eyes and on her face because of his pain. She wanted to be able to reach out and touch him, to let him know that she was there and that she loved him.

"Oh John," she said softly, watching him. "I wish you could hear me."

He didn't respond, just as she knew he wouldn't. He never heard her and once more, she sat with him until he woke with the sun.

Not that Mary Winchester understood why she was back. She knew she had died, she remembered everything. Remembered her poor John trying to fight the flames to get to her wanting to save her, just like the protector he had always been. She had wanted to reach out for his hand but she couldn't move, she watched helplessly as the flames reached out at him anytime he tried to get close, making sure he didn't save her. She remembered him taking their little boy Sam and taking him out, she heard his words to Dean as he came back for her. She watched even as the flames swallowed her that desperate look on his face, then the look of broken defeat when he knew he had to go for their boys. The look of pain at failing to keep her safe like he always promised her. In her death she got to see the men her little boys had turned into and sacrificed herself for them. She remembered all of that, she'd even seen her grave.

So why she was back she just didn't understand. Everything was so much different, her boys were men, and her husband was older yet she was the same as the day she died. She had been conflicted at first. Twenty four years almost had passed, was it right to try and get back into their lives? Would she be better vanishing and never letting them know? Mary Winchester couldn't do that, she had to at least try. At least let John know she was there. She knew the right thing to do was to let them make their choice and not make it for her boys. So she sought them out, oh the playful banter between her and John made her think of when they first were courting. She had threatened to kick his ass, and he almost welcomed it. Then she mentioned hitch hiking and in true John Winchester fashion he got protective and said he was coming to get her. Driving himself to his own ass kicking just to keep her safe. Or keep the dirty hands of the truckers on the road off of her, she wasn't quit sure which it was.

She had tried her hardest to look stern and unamused when he showed up in his truck, but once he stepped out and approached her she couldn't. She ran to him and wrapped her arms around him and clung to him. Her head buried perfectly in the crook of his neck like it always had. It was as if they were a perfect fit to each other. When his arms came around her she felt weak in her knees and just stayed there for a few moments until he helped her into the truck. He took her with him, and she thought there was hope yet that she'd get to still live a life with John Winchester. Only time would tell she could only hope he'd still love her. Though when she glanced over and noticed he still wore his wedding band that hope within grew. As she looked him over she realized one thing. She still loved John Winchester with all her heart, but she'd remain whatever he may want. If anything.

She had threatened an ass kicking and she was sure he somehow thought she was joking, maybe she was. She had been hellbent on getting to where he was and threatened hitch hiking. That had gotten John's attention and the protectiveness in him shined through and he said he was coming to get her. That had made her smile despite the threat she had given. Now it was wait and see if he came.

Mary Winchester found herself in Lawrence, Kansas which wouldn't have been strange for her at all, had she not of died twenty four years ago almost now. She felt out of sorts and had no idea what to do. Her first instinct was one she had years ago, to call John. She stopped at that thought, she'd been gone for so many years he surely had to have moved on by now. She couldn't turn his life upside down again after so long. She knew of their life, his and the boys. She knew that part of it, nothing more. Not if they had wives, or children. The thought of John having children with another woman made her shudder, but at the same time she hoped he was with someone and happy.

She hoped her boys were healthy, she always thought about them. She was sad she could be there with them as they grew up. She saw it but it all seemed like she was watching through a tunnel, they were so far away and out of her reach. It ached because she wanted to reach out and hold her children, she wanted to lay at night beside John, the man that had won her heart. SHe was denied everything she wanted. Died for reasons she did not yet know and understand, her baby Sam, that man, she knew him then it all went blank. She remembered the fire, death, looking down at Sam in fear wanting to rush him out of there yet unable to. Relief when John came and took him out, then sadness as she watched her husband valiantly try and save her. She would always be proud of him.

Now she walks around her old hometown getting strange stares, and she has no idea what to do. Word getting out that her ghost was haunting the town, when she was flesh and blood. All she was trying to do is pick up her life from the ashes she had been sent. To find home, and a purpose once more. She aches for a family she can't have anymore, and trudges on lost and alone.
